COP15: mass arrests and repression, Solidarity from Greece

Protest of the SYRIZA youth

The youth of SYRIZA made a protest on Thursday December 17^th, outside the Danish embassy in Athens.

The youth of SYRIZA expressed in this way their opposition to mass arrests and prosecution of demonstrators made by the Danish police and expressed their solidarity with those arrested.

The struggles for climate justice continues, the youth of SYRIZA protest for the brutal repression against the movement for a deal for the climate, and continue to fight under the slogan “Change the system not the climate”.

If you are looking for Greece,  look at position 71 together with Bulgaria, Romania and FYROM. These are the lowest placements for any EU country and they are well below countries like Turkey, Namibia and Ghana which are generally looked down upon by Greeks.

The official report says:

“Greece, which registered a significant drop in score from 4.7 in 2008 to 3.8 this year, is particularly concerning. The 2009 score reflects insufficient levels of anti-corruption enforcement, lengthy delays in the judicial process and a string of corporate corruption scandals which point to systemic weaknesses. Greece’s poor score shows that joining the EU does not automatically translate into a reduction in corruption. Immediate and sustained efforts are required to ensure the country lives up to acceptable levels of transparency and accountability.”

By the way, number 1 on the list is New Zealand. Cyprus is 27^th, Turkey is 61^st and Italy is 63^rd.
